Portwood had gotten her GED years ago, and now she’s finally getting to do what she always wanted — go to college.
“This is something I’ve been waiting for for so long,” Portwood told People. “I got my GED almost eight years ago and I’ve wanted to go to college ever since. I feel like this is a step toward a new beginning.”
She said her choice of major reflects her personal journey with her own mental health. Portwood has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder.
“I picked the major because of my own mental health status, and also just living the way that I’ve lived with it, and understanding my kind of world and this mental health world,” she said. “I want to understand other people even more.”
Portwood is mother to two children: 2-year-old son James, whom she shares with ex Andrew Glennon, and 12-year-old daughter Leah, whom she shares with ex Gary Shirley.
She said she wants to be a role model for her kids and show them “that you can always turn a negative into a positive.”
