George & Amal Clooney Donate $100,000 For Beirut Relief Efforts

George and Amal Clooney have donated $100,000 to Beirut relief efforts after a massive explosion rocked the capital city of Lebanon on Aug. 4.

On Aug. 6, the couple pledged to send the money to several charities including the Lebanese Red Cross and Impact Lebanon. Amal was born in Beirut before her family moved to the United Kingdom when she was two years old.

“We’re both deeply concerned for the people of Beirut and the devastation they’ve faced in the last few days,” the Clooneys said in a statement to E. “Three charitable organizations we’ve found are providing essential relief on the ground: the Lebanese Red Cross, Impact Lebanon, and Baytna Baytak. We will be donating $100,000 to these charities and hope that others will help in any way they can.”

The August 4 explosion killed more than 200 people, and more than 100 are still missing. The explosion injured thousands, leveling buildings across the city. The exact cause of the explosion is unclear, though it is linked to a massive amount of ammonium nitrate that had been stored for years at the city’s port.

Many celebrities have spoken out about the explosion, sending their support and calling on their followers to donate.

Ariana Grande tweeted, “my heart, strength and condolences are with Lebanon and everyone affected by this tragedy. please support / donate if you’re able to, i will be doing so too.”

The Good Place actress Jameela Jamil tweeted, “I am stunned by what I have seen. I am so sorry to the families who have lost loved ones today in Beirut. If you are looking for how to help, here is a fund. .”

Dylan Minnette from the band Wallows tweeted, “hospitals in beirut are completely full and there are thousands injured. here’s how you can help,”

Halsey tweeted, “my heart is aching looking at these photos in Beirut. I have read from a lot of people that petitions aren’t effective and donations can result in a dramatic exchange decrease. Can someone share with me direct information about how we can help most effectively and immediately?”

YouTuber Zane Hijazi, who grew up in Beirut tweeted, “Here’s another reliable site to donate to. Seeing a place I grew up in experiencing such turmoil, is really unsettling. And with the economic crisis they were experiencing beforehand, they need all the help we can give.”
