After over 30 years, Sarah and Todd Palin quietly finalized their divorce earlier this year according to court records. While the Palins have kept their divorce out of the public eye, the publicly available documents reveal that their divorce was granted on March 23 of this year.

On September 6, Todd first filed for divorce citing the “incompatibility of temperament between the parties such that they find it impossible to live together as husband and wife.” According to Todd’s complaint, he was seeking joint custody of their youngest son Trig and fair division of the couple’s assets.

Last fall in her only public interview about their divorce, Sarah told Dr. James Dobson in a podcast, “a week after our 31st anniversary is when he [Todd] filed.” She continued to say, “It’s not easy to talk about. It was devastating. I thought I got shot.”

In the interview, she added, “We’re going through counseling now” and “it’s not over over.”

“My kids are cool because they don’t like it and that helps me, you know. It helps me. They’re not ones to say, ‘Oh, it takes two to tango. No, they’re mad, because they have been brought up with that teaching that you have made a covenant with God,” Sarah continued.

The couple met in high school and eloped in August 1988. They have five children together including 12-year-old Trig who lives at home.

Just a few months before Todd filed for divorce, the couple’s family friend Dean Cain said, “They seemed wonderful together. I’d hate to speculate on the cause — what happens behind closed doors and how people grow and change over time is something no one can ever predict or understand, save those two people. I know that they’re both extremely devoted and wonderful parents and I’m certain that they’ll both remain dedicated to Trig and their other children.”
