Eddie Murphy’s ‘SNL’ Opening Monologue Slammed Bill Cosby’s Rep

After 35 years, Eddie Murphy returned to Saturday Night Live where he gave his infamous Bill Cosby impression during his opening monologue. Murphy took shots at Cosby, the disgraced comedian who is currently incarcerated for sexual abuse.

“If you told me 30 years ago that I’d be this boring stay-at-home house dad and Bill Cosby would be in jail, even I wouldn’t have took that bet,” Murphy said, in Cosby’s voice, “Who is America’s dad now?”

Cosby’s team did not find the remarks funny. On The Cosby Show star’s official Instagram, his publicist Andrew Wyatt posted an aggressive statement criticizing Murphy.

“Mr. Cosby broke color barriers in the Entertainment Industry, so that Blacks like Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappell, Kevin Hart and et al., could have an opportunity to showcase their talents for many generations to come,” Wyatt said. “It is sad that Mr. Murphy would take this glorious moment of returning to SNL and make disparaging remarks against Mr. Cosby. One would think that Mr. Murphy was given his freedom to leave the plantation, so that he could make his own decisions; but he decided to sell himself back to being a Hollywood Slave.”

There has been bad blood between Cosby and Murphy ever since Cosby criticized the comedy special Eddie Murphy Raw. Murphy during the film admitted that in 1987 he received a phone call from Cosby in which Murphy was slammed for cursing, criticized his parenting and described as a bad role model.

Wyatt then added his advice. “Hopefully, you will be amenable to having a meeting of the minds conversation, in order to discuss how we can use our collective platforms to enhance Black people rather than bringing all of us down together,” Wyatt said.

Murphy’s opening monologue Murphy had surprise appearances by fellow comedians Dave Chappelle, Tracey Morgan and Chris Rock. Along with his monologue Murphy took part in skits with his famous characters including Mr.Robinson, Gumby and Velvet Jones.
