2019 Tony Award Nominations Announced: ‘Hadestown’ & ‘Ain’t Too Proud’ [Full Nominees’ List]

Broadway’s biggest night is fast approaching! As nominations for the 73rd annual Tony Awards have officially been announced, of which honor the best musicals, performances, and plays on Broadway within the past year.

In the lead with nominations is Hadestown, a music retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, which has received 14 nominations in total. And following closely behind is Ain’t Too Proud — The Life And Times of the Temptations with 12 nominationsn, and Tootsie, an adaptation of the 1982 Dustin Hoffman film with 11. These three shows nominations fall under the Best Musical category, along with Beetlejuice and The Prom.

As for nominees for the Best Play category, Choir Boy, The Ferryman, Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus, Ink, and What the Constitution Means to Me have all been nominated.

This morning, Broadway Tony winner Bebe Neuwirth and Tony nominee Brandon Victor Dixon announced the official nominations live, and a portion of the categories aired on CBS This Morning.

Ahead of the award ceremony, a few Tony honorees have already been revealed. Which include Judith Light, who will receive this year’s Isabelle Stevenson Award for her advocacy to end HIV/AIDS and her support of LGBTQ+ and human rights. Rosemary Harris, playwright Terrence McNally, and composer Howard Wheeler will also receive Tony Awards for lifetime achievement. Special Tony Awards are also expected to go to Sonny Tilders and musical director and arranger Jason Michael Webb and late actress Marin Mazzie.

The 73rd Tony Awards which will take place at New York’s Radio City Musical Hall On Sunday, June 9, will be hosted by James Corden and will be aired live on CBS.
