Israeli Musical Duo, Lola Marsh, Wants To “Put Genres Aside” [VIDEO EXCLUSIVE]
Lola Marsh, the indie pop duo, was formed by Gil Landau and Yael Shoshana Cohen in 2013 in Tel Aviv, Israel – and have been making music ever since. With Cohen’s vocal abilities and Landau on guitar and keyboard, the duo have been rising to global success.
The two met when Cohen crashed Landau’s birthday party in 2011. It all started when she saw him playing “his old father’s guitar.” “We just started to play songs we both knew, and it was magical,” she said in an exclusive interview with uInterview at SXSW. Landau says that they had “chemistry right away.”

After meeting they began to meet multiple times a week to write and make music together. “I think at the third or fourth meeting, we wrote our first song, we really knew there was something special,” Cohen said, “And after that we met four or five times a week.”
The name “Lola Marsh” came up when they were with a group of friends before their first show. “We just threw out names through the air, and ‘Lola Marsh’ just came and we liked the sound of it,” Cohen explained.

Despite identifying with the indie genre, Lola Marsh does not like to conform their music to one style. “But I hate genres,” Landau says. “So we actually are trying to use different words for our music.” Cohen describes their songs as “cinematic, nostalgic [and] dreamy.”

How would you describe your music?
Gil Landau: That’s a really tough question. I think if I would put it in like a genre, or something, I can say it’s like indie, pop, folk, maybe like dream pop. But I hate genres. So we actually are trying to use different words for our music. It’s very cinematic.
Yael Shoshana Cohen: Its very cinematic, nostalgic, dreamy.
GL: Yeah let’s put genres aside.
Can you describe the song writing process?
YC: Both of us are writing the music together. Sometimes it’s challenging.
GL: It’s not only one’s opinion.
YC: Sometimes we fight, we argue
GL: Most of the time
YC: But I like that we bring different colors, it’s interesting, it’s interesting work.
GL: We try to inspire each other, like someone brings a melody to a certain part, someone brings only lyrics or a verse.
How did you meet?
YC: It was at Gil’s birthday party. It was in 2011, I crashed the party, I saw Gil, he was playing his old father’s guitar.
GL: So romantic huh?
YC: The room was smoky. We just started to play songs we both knew, and it was magical.
GL: It was chemistry right away.
YC: Then we just decided to meet, and we met a couple times. I think at the third or fourth meeting, we wrote our first song, we really knew there was something special. And after that we met four or five times a week. We were really serious about it, from the beginning, when we had nothing. We didn’t have a name!
What does “Lola Marsh” mean?
GL: I don’t know
YC: We just sat with friends, we needed a name, because we had a show, our first show. We just threw out names through the air, and “Lola Marsh” just came and we liked the sound of it.
GL: It really [fit] the music.
YC: It fit the six songs we had.
GL: To this day, it’s really round, like “Lola Marsh!”
