Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage is urging fans not to buy huskies because they look like the show’s fictional direwolves.

PETER DINKLAGE URGES THRONES FANS TO STOP BUYING HUSKIES

Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister on the hit HBO show, has teamed up with PETA to stop a growing trend among Thrones fans. It appears many have purchased husky dogs because they resemble the symbol animal of House Stark, only to abandon the animals once the novelty has worn off.

“Please, to all of Game of Thrones‘ many wonderful fans, we understand that due to the direwolves’ huge popularity, many folks are going out and buying huskies,” Dinklage said in a statement. “Not only does this hurt all the deserving homeless dogs waiting for a chance at a good home in shelters, but shelters are also reporting that many of these huskies are being abandoned — as often happens when dogs are bought on impulse, without understanding their needs.”

He went on to instead ask that if a fan wants a new pet, to adopt from a shelter because of the thousands of animals out there that are looking for forever homes. “Please, please, if you’re going to bring a dog into your family, make sure that you’re prepared for such a tremendous responsibility and remember to always, ALWAYS, adopt from a shelter,” he said.

Dinklage is a longtime supporter of PETA, who previously joined with the organization in a video about the meat industry. He joins a long list of celebrity animal rights activists in working with PETA to promote kindness to animals. Thrones‘ Lena Headey, who plays Cersei Lannister, has also helped with PETA, while Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) is an active participant in the fight to save dolphins and whales from marine animal shows and illegal poaching.
