In an auction bolstered by the Rick and Morty fandom, a McDonald’s 20-year-old Szechuan sauce packet has been sold in an eBay auction for $15,000. The popular and now retired sauce was mentioned during the third season’s premiere of the wildly popular animation.

Urged by public demand, McDonald’s brought back the Szechuan sauce and to commemorate the end of the series’ third season they sent a bottle to Rick and Morty creator, Justin Roiland. The fast food chain also sent a few packets to the fans that tweeted about the sauce’s celebrated comeback. One of the recipients put the packet up for auction on eBay.

During the season three premiere, Rick goes back in time to get hold of McDonald’s delicious dipping sauce. In the episode ‘Rickshank Redemption’ Rick travels back to a McDonald’s store with the sole purpose to satiate his Szechuan sauce craving. The now discontinued sauce was marketed and launched by the fast food titan in 1998 alongside the release of Disney’s film Mulan.

McDonald’s offered the limited-edition sauce as a promotional product nearly twenty years ago, but Rick and Morty fans are clamoring for the sauce’s revival. A petition for Mcdonald’s to reintroduce the beloved sauce, described as being similar to the sweet and sour sauce common in American-Chinese food, has been circulating since the episode aired in April.

The fervor surrounding the sauce reached unimaginable heights when someone purchased a packet of the sauce for $15,000 on eBay. The fast food giant took notice of the renewed interest in their Szechuan McNugget sauce and teased at its possible reintroduction.

“We never say never, because when our customers speak, we listen. And to paraphrase some of our most enthusiastic fans, our sauce is so good that it would be worth waiting 9 seasons or 97 years for,” a spokesperson for McDonald’s said, quoting the cartoon’s sauce-crazed mad scientist.
