The city of Madrid has introduced a new sign to discourage “manspreading” on its buses this week.

“Manspreading” is the practice of men encroaching on other seats by sitting with their legs wide apart. The term became known after women posted pictures of the phenomenon on social media.

The feminist group Mujeres en Lucha launched a petition on change.org to ban the practice which they said often led to seeing women “with their legs shut and very uncomfortable because there is a man next to them invading their space.”

“It’s a question of culture. We women have always been told to occupy the least amount of space possible, and men haven’t,” a leader of the anti-manspreading campaign, Alejandra de la Fuente, told the National Post.

The hashtag ‘#MadridSinManspreading’ soon went viral and the Municipal Transportation Company (EMT) announced it will be incorporating new signage to dissuade “manspreaders.”
