Meryl Streep Feuds With Karl Lagerfeld Over Oscars Dress
Maryl Streep found herself involved in a feud with Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld over her Oscars dress.
MERYL STREEP FEUDS WITH KARL LAGERFELD OVER DRESS
Lagerfeld said in an interview that Streep requested a Chanel dress for the award ceremony but then backed out after another label offered to pay the actress to wear their design. “A genius actress, but cheapness also, no?” said Lagerfeld.
A representative for Streep quickly denied the allegations, saying it was against the actress’ ethics to pull such a stunt. Chanel and Lagerfeld quickly issued an apology: “Chanel engaged in conversations with Ms. Streep’s stylist to design a dress for her to wear to the Academy Awards, with the full understanding that she was considering options from other design houses. When informed by the stylist that Ms. Streep had chosen a dress by another designer there was no mention of the reason. Chanel wishes to express our continued and deep respect for Ms. Streep.”
Despite this apology, Streep is not satisfied. “In reference to Mr. Lagerfeld’s ‘statement,’ there is no ‘controversy’: Karl Lagerfeld, a prominent designer, defamed me, my stylist, and the illustrious designer whose dress I chose to wear, in an important industry publication,” Streep said. “That publication printed this defamation, unchecked. Subsequently, the story was picked up globally, and continues, globally, to overwhelm my appearance at the Oscars, on the occasion of my record breaking 20th nomination, and to eclipse this honor in the eyes of the media, my colleagues and the audience. I do not take this lightly, and Mr. Lagerfeld’s generic ‘statement’ of regret for this ‘controversy’ was not an apology,” she continued. “He lied, they printed the lie, and I am still waiting.”
Lagerfeld is known for being outspoken and never biting his tongue. He caught some legal trouble when he blamed obese people for the “hole in Social Security.” He also ran into trouble when he made fun of Adele‘s weight, and also when he reacted poorly to Kim Kardashian‘s Paris robbery.
Streep was nominated for her 20th nomination this year with a Best Actress nod for her work in Florence Foster Jenkins. She lost to Emma Stone in La La Land. Streep has won 3 of her 20 noms, one supporting actress and two for best actress. She holds the record for most acting nominations for a single person in Oscars history.
