Filmmaker Rob Stewart was diving off of the Florida Keys for part of his Sharkwater documentary series when he went missing.
SHARKWATER FILMMAKER ROB STEWART MISSING
He and a small group were diving near Alligator Reef off Lower Matecumbe Key when he and a fellow diver resurfaced, with the other diver passed out. The boat crew got the unconscious diver onto the boat only to discover that Stewart had then disappeared.
They believe Stewart, 37, may have also lost consciousness after resurfacing and floated away. His sister told The Miami Herald that the divers were using somewhat unconventional scuba tanks, which was closed circulation re-breathing equipment. This may have contributed to the incident.
The U.S. Coast Guard, Monroe Country Sheriff’s Office, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have conducted a search for the filmmaker, but it remains unclear how long the search will last.
Stewart’s friends and family have created a GoFundMe page to help finance the search, and have thus far raised more than $128,000.
