The Hunger Games franchise appeared to come to a close with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 hitting theaters last month – but there’s talk the series could be reborn with prequels.

The Hunger Games Prequels?

Lionsgate entertainment vice chairman Michael Burns spoke about the future of the The Hunger Games at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York earlier this week. Comparing The Hunger Games to Harry Potter, Burns said that it will “live on and on and on” even though they’ve run out of Suzanne Collins‘ three-novel source material

Rather than moving forward in time, Burns suggested that they would likely look to delve further into the history of Panem in films to come.

“The one thing that kids say they missed (from the last two Hunger Games) was there was no arenas,” he said, referring to the contained Hunger Games battle ares. “If we went backwards there obviously would be arenas.”

According to Burns, The Hunger Games will not be the only Lionsgate product that will be getting new installments. Vampire teen drama Twilight, horror series Saw and The Expendables action franchise could all have new movies coming out in the not-so-distant future.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, which hit theaters Nov. 16, has pulled it about $525 million at the worldwide box office thus far following its $100 million opening weekend.
