‘How To Get Away With Murder’ Mid-Season Winter Finale Recap: Wes Shoots Annalise
4/5
The mid-season finale picked up right where last episode left off: Caleb (Kendrick Sampson) asks Michaela (Aja Naomi King) if she thinks Catherine (Amy Okuda) might have killed his and her stepparents alone after finding a gun hidden in a vent in her painting studio. Connor (Jack Falahee) is there too after Michaela calls him, and Catherine walks in and sees the three of them but quickly runs away, although one can imagine that the they all let her escape because she couldn’t have run away with all three of them at her house. Meanwhile, Wes (Alfred Enoch) shows Annalise (Viola Davis) and Nate (Billy Brown) a picture of Philip (Jefferson White) he discovered that has one of Catherine’s paintings in the background, thus strongly leading them to believe there is some sort of connection between the two.
‘How To Get Away With Murder’ Mid-Season Winter Finale Recap
Emily Sinclair (Sarah Burns) leaks the story about how the corrupt Judge Millstone (John Posey), Asher’s father, was indirectly responsible for no justice being served in the Tiffany Howard gang-rape case that Asher (Matt McGorry) was directly involved in, and Judge Millstone kills himself by hanging himself.
Sinclair calls out Nate for being a coward and Annalise’s “boy toy,” and after she brings up his late wife Nia, Nate snaps at her in front of the whole police precinct and loses his job again. Sinclair then meets privately with him and although she doesn’t formally apologize, she promises to drop the harassment suit she filed against him after his reaction if he drops his racial discrimination suit against her. She then asks him to help her take down Annalise, but Nate refuses.
Asher meets Sinclair while driving in a parking lot and angrily accuses her of being responsible for his father’s death, but Sinclair says he got what he deserved and that the city of Philadelphia is better of without him. She turns around and walks off and Asher tries to control his rage, but he loses his cool and backs up his car and runs over Sinclair, killing her immediately.
Asher calls Bonnie (Liza Weil) to help him carry the body, and Bonnie informs Annalise of her death and meets Annalise at the Hapstall mansion, where she is discussing what to do next with her interns now that Catherine has escaped. Bonnie, Asher, and Annalise bring Sinclair’s corpse into the mansion, and the interns find out whose body it is. Annalise then tells Asher the truth: that the four other students on her team killed Sam and not Bonnie, who told him this to protect them all. Annalise then says that they will now help her finish this case as punishment, and tells them her plan after they begin to protest and she angrily tells them to shut up. Annalise plans to pin Sinclair’s murder on Catherine, who will be drugged by Frank (Charlie Weber) using the pills Annalise used to kill Nia. Frank indeed finds Catherine at a motel and drugs her after Philip is released from the police station and goes to find her.
Bonnie and Asher drag Sinclair’s body to the top of the mansion and throw her off. Laurel (Karla Souza) suggests hiding the gun in the pool so that the chlorine can erase the fingerprints, but Wes disagrees. Annalise then calls 911 and says Catherine has shot her, and then orders the interns to shoot her but they refuse. Connor is about to pull the trigger but Michaela jumps in front of her. Connor refuses to do this even though Annalise threatens to ruin Oliver’s life if he doesn’t, and Laurel suggests they should just turn themselves in and get arrested rather than increase the body count. Annalise then asks Wes to shoot her and after Annalise tells him that Rebecca (Katie Findlay) is dead and that she has been lying the whole time, Wes attempts to shoot her in the leg but shoots her in the stomach instead. Annalise lies writhing on the floor and whispers “Christophe.” A flashback is then shown of a young Wes talking to a police officer shortly after his mother has hurt herself and probably killed herself, and Annalise and Eve (Famke Janssen) are shown watching this exchange take place.
