John Wetson, WWII Veteran, Spends 90th Birthday Strapped To Biplane

John Weston, a World War II veteran, spent his birthday 500 feet above Licolnshire, England, strapped to the upper wing of a 1942 biplane for 15 minutes. The 90-year-old, who was a gear runner on a Lancaster Bomber in WWII, was raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society to commemorate his wife’s passing.

According to BCC, the veteran raised money for research benefiting Alzheimer’s Society, which aims to fight the disease that his wife had. “For three years [she] was reasonably active, then she got very poorly and for the last eight months it was cruel to see her,” he said. “She’d lost the use of her arms, legs, speech and couldn’t swallow.”

The video shows Wetson being strapped to a chair on the upper wing of the biplane, and when the news reporter asked him if he’s nervous, he bravely shouted “no.” Later in the video, the biplane is seen taken off, and Wetson smiles and waves down to the people watching the event.

“He’s got more guts than me,” said a woman watching the event.

“It’s windy up there!” Weston, who had to lose 12 lbs for the challenge, said when he landed adding that he was grateful no one was trying to “shoot him down.”
