Obioha, 31, was arrested Friday on suspicion of murder in Melvin’s death, reported KTLA. He is currently being held on $1 million bail.
It has been determined that Obioha and Melvin, 30, knew each other through business, and that they had had a financial dispute leading up to the shooting. Obioha, who ran his own clothing line called Hoodfellas, had reached out to Melvin’s online marketing company. When it came time to pay Melvin, Obioha allegedly wrote her a bad check that bounced, leading Melvin to threaten legal action.
“We have been working hard around the clock on this and we didn’t want to draw attention to the leads we developed,” Lt. John Radke of the Los Angeles Police Department told the Los Angeles Times. “This was a terrible crime and it is one of those scenes you’ll never forget.”
Melvin’s father Bernie Melvin, who had known about the financial dispute, expressed his thanks that someone has been arrested for his daughter’s murder.
“I’m thankful that he was apprehended and arrested,” he told the Los AngelesTimes. “But we can’t celebrate. This was a violent, senseless, meaningless act.”
Melvin was shot and killed on July 5 while walking alongside her boyfriend on Sunset Boulevard. Someone had walked up behind them and shot her in the head with a shotgun. After firing the weapon, the suspect fled the scene in a black sedan.
While Obioha is being held in police custody on bail, he has yet to be charged with Melvin’s murder.
