Griner and Johnson, both 24, got into a heated argument in their recently purchased home in Goodyear, Ariz. When the verbal argument turned physical, a number of people who were at the home at the time attempted to intervene. When that failed, police were called to the scene, according to a police report.
“It turned into a fight. Broke up. We kept arguing, mouthing back and forth, clashed again, separated us, clashed again, separated us, and here we are now,” Griner told officers, the report states.
Neither Griner nor Johnson plan on pressing charges and have released a statement through Griner’s lawyer, David Michael Cantor.
“The last few months have been an extremely stressful time for Brittney and Glory,” the statement read. “They will continue to work through these hardships together and ask that the media respect their privacy as they handle this family matter. Glory and Brittney sincerely apologize for the distraction this has caused their families, respective teams, the WNBA, sponsors and fans.”
The Phoenix Mercury, Griner’s WNBA team, released a statement through Executive Vice President and General Manager Jim Pitman. “The Mercury organization is aware of an alleged incident involving Brittney Griner,” Pitman said. “We are in the process of gathering additional information, and will have no further comment at this time.”
WNBA spokesperson Dina Skokos echoed Pitman’s sentiment, saying in a statement on behalf of the league, “We are aware of the incident involving Brittney Griner and Glory Johnson and are working with the Phoenix Mercury and Tulsa Shock organizations to obtain more information.”
In the 2014 season, Griner, who was a standout in college for Baylor, helped the Mercury win the WNBA title in 2014. Griner was named the Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the All-WNBA first team in 2014 as well.
