The first photos of Melissa Benoist as Supergirl were released on Friday, giving fans a first look at the new Supergirl CBS series.

Melissa Benoist Is Supergirl

CBS released two new photos of Benoist in full Supergirl costume Friday, just as production began on the Supergirl pilot.

Colleen Atwood, who designed the costumes used on The CW’s Arrow and The Flash, designed the costume, which has the traditional comic look – a long-sleeved dress with high knee boots, all in the traditional blue and red. “In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today,” Atwood said in a statement.

Benoist seems thrilled with the costume, posting the photos on Twitter along with the message, “I still can’t believe I am wearing the House of El coat of arms.”

Supergirl is being developed by Arrow and The Flash producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, along with Chuck’s Ali Adler. The CBS show will star Benoist as Kara Danvers/Zor-El, Mechad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Jeremy Jordan as Winslow ‘Winn’ Scott, Calista Flockhart as Kara’s boss Cat Grant, Chyler Leigh as Kara’s foster sister Alex and Laura Benanti as Kara’s birth mother, Alura Zor-El. Production on the Supergirl pilot began this week and is expected to air on CBS in the Fall.
