Uma Thurman caused quite a buzz after appearing at an event Monday night completely devoid of eye-makeup, causing some to question whether or not the actress had gone under the knife.

Uma Thurman Makeup Look Sparks Plastic Surgery Rumors

Thurman walked the red carpet Monday to celebrate the upcoming premiere of her new television miniseries The Slap and was immediately questioned by tabloids and critics who noticed a difference in her appearance. In fact, the actress faced backlash similar to how Renée Zellweger was treated when she re-entered into the spotlight late in 2014.

“Uma Thurman appears to have had a dangerous liaison with plastic surgery,” wrote the New York Daily News. The Daily Mail asked, “Now what has Uma Thurman done to her face?” And people on Twitter wasted no time in making similar comments.

Uma Thurman Makeup Artist Dishes On The Look

However, Thurman’s makeup artist, Troy Surratt, said that it was lack of eye makeup that created the illusion of a different face. The public, so used to seeing celebrities with completely made-up faces, appear to be unable to comprehend how makeup can transform one’s face.

“Frankly, I’m quite surprised by the conversation. By now, I would have thought that we were all open to and knowledgeable of the role that makeup plays in the world of fashion and particularly celebrity, as a medium for creative self expression. I think that women should feel open and free to experiment with different beauty looks – it’s only makeup, at the end of the day it all washes off,” Surratt told People.

Surratt revealed that he used no mascara on Thurman for the look, choosing to focus instead on creating a clear, luminous complexion and bold lip. Bold brows and sleeked back hair completed the classic look.

The Slap premieres Thursday, Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. on NBC.
