Alex Trebek Threatened To Quit ‘Jeopardy’ In New Leaked Sony Email
Alex Trebek, in a new email leaked by the Sony hackers, suggested he’s considering leaving Jeopardy due to his treatment from the show’s producers.
Alex Trebek Quitting ‘Jeopardy’?
Trebek fired off an irritated email to Jeopardy producers at Sony Pictures Television when he learned he would have to re-tape a segment from a Jeopardy! Kids episode due to a complaint from an upset parent. During the first taping, Trebek informed one of the contestants that she’d be unable to compete in the Final Round because she was in the red. Crushed at the news, the girl ran backstage, where she was consoled by her mother and a producer before returning to the set.
“If you all think I should retape the opening, I will, but I want to say that for 30 years I’ve defended our show against attacks inside and out. But it doesn’t seem to operate both ways,” Trebek said in the heated exchange. “When I’m vilified, corporate (and certainly legal) always seems to say ‘don’t say anything and it’ll blow over,’ and I’m not feeling support from the producers, and that disappoints the s**t out of me.”
“If I’m making mistakes and saying things you don’t like, maybe it’s time for me to move on,” Trebek added. “It’s not a threat, but I want to let you know how I’m feeling.”
The original email from the mother had read, “If [Trebek] had taken the time, he would have known, like you do, that my daughter is not a sore loser, and does not become emotional solely over losing a game. She was upset about not being able to completely play the game to the end. I don’t think I’ll ever forgive him for that.”
Despite Trebek’s obvious displeasure, he apparently backtracked on the idea of walking away from Jeopardy all together and has made amends with the producers.
