Joan Rivers made a career out of being harsh and an empire out of being controversial. She was one of the last of an old-school generation that looked at comedy like it was a religion—that saw how necessary it was in society. She remained relevant for 81 years. Here are some reasons why.

#1 On model AnnaSophia Robb’s skirt and blouse during New York Fashion Week: “This outfit is so young and fresh and sexy. It just screams date rape.”

#2 On Heidi Klum: “The last time a German looked this hot was when they were pushing Jews into the ovens!”

#3 Motherly advice: “My daughter, we’re very close, but I brought her up all wrong. I brought her up to have morals. She turned down doing a Playboy magazine cover. $400,000 naked to the waist! Turned it fucking down, and calls me for approval. For approval! ‘Mother, I’ve turned down Playboy, what do you think?’ What do I think? What do I think, you stupid fucking cunt, what do I think? I think you should have asked for $200,000 more and shown them your pussy, that’s what I think.”

#4 TMZ asked both Joan and her daughter Melissa about Lindsay Lohan's miscarriage revelation. Rivers answered, “I hope she kept it.” Melissa was obviously disgusted, so Joan followed it up with: "I was born with a coat hanger in my ear."

#5 Earlier this year, Rivers was promoting her reality show Joan & Melissa and made a joke about the Ariel Castro kidnapping victims.

The media went insane and Rivers refused to apologize because that’s not what comedy is about.

#6 On the Academy Awards. “It just dawned on me why Jennifer Lawrence fell on her way up to the stage to get her Oscar. She tripped over her own arrogance.”
