RECAP: 'American Horror Story' Airs Eerie 'Nor'easter,' Episode On Halloween
Perhaps it was only a coincidence that FX's American Horror Story: Asylum happened to air on Halloween night in its normal timeslot, but fans aren't complaining about the fear factor of the episode, entitled "Nor'easter," made all the more spooky and uncanny by the fact that it aired just after Hurricane Sandy devastated parts of the Northeast U.S.
The timing of the episode, in which Briarcliff is preparing for a colossal storm, was merely a coincidence. "It's very strange and somewhat sad," American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy, who also created FOX's Glee, told CNN. "We wrote this script I think in June. We based it on several big 50s and 60s Nor'easters that hit the East Coast, obviously not as severe as the one that just hit. It's very eerie," he said.
If you were able to get past the uncanny title, there were a lot of fearsome details to keep you glued. For one, it looks like Adam Levine and Jenna Dewan Tatum, the unlucky newlyweds who happened upon the ruins of Briarcliff Asylum in present day, have finally had it, being offed by a couple of (copycat?) Bloody Faces. Back in the old days, however, the pushover Sister Eunice (Lily Rabe) is meek-no-more, having been possessed by the devil and adopted some bad-girl ways, right down to her sexy lingerie and bright red lipstick.
James Cromwell's Dr. Arden is — no surprise here — up to no good, getting amputation-happy with his big sharp utensils and chopping off Shelley's (Chloe Sevigny) legs as a punishment for her whorishness, not to mention her reaction to his own member. But there's more to come between the two of them. "It is a tragic thing," Murphy spoiled. "I did think that she's a tragic character. Her dilemma and her pain and her trying to escape in the next couple of episodes is a really big plot point, so I don't wanna say much. When you see the evolution of what Dr. Arden continues to do to her, it's pretty amazing."
American Horror Story viewers also got another peek at the goblin-like, mutant monsters who live in the wilderness and chow down on human remains provided them by Dr. Arden, as well as the aliens who may or may not have abducted the wife of Kit (Evan Peters).
American Horror Story, also starring Jessica Lange, Joseph Fiennes and Zachary Quinto, airs on FX Wednesday nights at 10 p.m.
