Seth MacFarlane Says 'No Way' To Repeating As Oscar Host
Seth MacFarlane says he has no plans to return to the Academy Awards stage as a host, after having boosted the program's ratings significantly during its Sunday broadcast.
To hosting the Oscar a second time MacFarlane said, “No way,” in response to the question from a Twitter follower. “Lotta fun to have done it, though." MacFarlane repeatedly said in interviews prior to the show on Sunday that he had no plans to make this job anything more than a one-time thing. "I will have put five months of work into the Oscars,” MacFarlane told USA Today early in the month. "It's been a monster of a schedule with everything else I have to deal with. Which is why I don't think I can do it again. I think it's a one-time thing. But it's been a lot of fun."
ABC might be wishing the Family Guy creator would have a change of heart, as MacFarlane’s hosting may have contributed to the 11% increase in viewers in the coveted 18-to-49-year-old demographic from last year. Furthermore, Nielsen revealed that the number of viewers, 40.3 million, totaled 1 million more than last year’s Academy Awards.
However, while MacFarlane may have brought more eyeballs to the program, not all of them liked what they saw. Since the opening monologue debuted his little song, “We Saw Your Boobs,” he’s received quite the backlash from critics. Many were also up in arms about a joke that compared Django Unchained to Chris Brown/Rihanna's "date night," and another delivered by teddy bear character Ted about Jewish people dominating Hollywood.
It’s possible that MacFarlane was intentionally pushing the envelope on Sunday, fully confident that he only wanted to host the Oscars once. Regardless, now that the job is over, he’ll have plenty of time to dedicate himself to unearthing other bits of crude humor that will more appropriately appear in Family Guy, American Dad, The Cleveland Show and the sequel to Ted.
