SPOILERS: Grey's Anatomy Explores Drama With Multiple Transplants

“Transplant Wasteland,” the most recent episode of the ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy, juggled the drama surrounding an influx of transplants to Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital.

"Transplant Wasted" opened with Jackson (Jesse Williams) in charge of Seattle Grace, and he decided to implement some drastic changes to the hospital, most notably expressing his desire to find a new Chief of Surgery. Not surprisingly, this action prompted Owen (Kevin McKidd) to resign.

The surgeons, meanwhile, all balanced different demands regarding surgical transplants. Alex (Justin Chambers) had to convince a 16 year-old girl to accept a kidney transplant, but the girl was reluctant to have the surgery for fear of how her body would react to the subsequent medications. Cristina (Sandra Oh) had to do some persuasive work of her own in dealing with a heart and a lung transplant involving two old men, a Mr. Schultz and a Mr. Crump, who hated each other because they were part of an difficult love triangle in the past. The problem was that Cristina wanted Crump to accept Schultz's heart so that then Schultz could receive a dual heart/lung transplant, but Crump had no interest in the idea. All the while a patient who April (Sarah Drew) knew wanted to be taken off life support so that his organs could be used to help others, and this chivalrous, albeit extremely difficult, act caught April off guard.

In the end, Alex's patient accepted the kidney transplant, Mr. Crump took Schultz's heart, and April's friend was allowed to pass away and have his organs put to good use. Additionally, Jackson elected to keep Owen in charge, reopen the emergency room and also rename the hospital: the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

The next episode of Grey’s Anatomy, “Idle Hands,” airs Thursday on ABC at 8 p.m. EST. —Hal Sundt
