Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey directly addressed each other in what must have been the first time in weeks on last night's American Idol. As could be expected, it wasn't exactly a cordial interaction.

After Kree Harrison's performance of "She Talks to Angels" by The Black Crowes, Carey said, "You can sing anything, and I love to hear you sing." However, the diva wasn't thrilled with Kree's stage presence, adding, "My favorite Kree moments are when you are lost in a song and just don't care."

Keith Urban agreed with Carey about Kree's stage presence. Nicki Minaj, however, disagreed with both of them.

"I disagree with Keith and Mariah. That was the best performance of the night," stated Minaj. After pinpointing a critique from Urban who had said that Kree looked "awkward," Carey decided to step into the crossfire, interjecting, "I wasn't saying she was awkward." When Minaj clarified that it was Urban who'd said Kree was awkward, Carey replied, "You don't really disagree with me."

"No, I do," Minaj spat back. "And I'll explain." When Carey tried to talk over the hip-hop artist, Minaj cut her off again, dismissively saying, "Simmer down, sir."

Despite the momentary distraction, the all-female top five performed two songs apiece – one from the year they were born, and one from a diva – almost all of which were show-stoppers.

Candace Glover sang Paula Abdul's "Straight Up" from 1989, and Carey and Whitney Houston's "When You Believe." Janelle Arthur sang Vince Gil's "When I Call Your Name" and Dolly Parton's "Dumb Blonde". In addition to "She Talks to Angels" by The Black Crowes, Kree took on Celine Dion's "Have you Ever Been in Love." Angie Miller performed "I'll Stand By You" by The Pretenders from the piano and Beyonce's "Halo." Amber sang Carey's cover of "Without You" and Barbra Streisand's "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?"

Minaj's palpable animosity towards Carey (the person), doesn't seem to carry over to Carey (the singer). When two separate contestants sang singles of Carey's, Minaj lavished praise on her fellow judge's singing abilities, and commended the Idol-hopfuls for tackling such vocally ambitious songs. Minaj even admitted that she would listen to Carey and Houston's "When You Believe" on loop when she was growing up.

American Idol returns tonight on Fox at 8/7c to narrow the field down to four.
