John Oliver Debuts As Jon Stewarts' Substitute On ‘The Daily Show’

John Oliver was met with positive reviews after debuting as the summer host of The Daily Show on Monday night.

Oliver acknowledged the strangeness of someone besides regular host Jon Stewart behind the desk. “Let’s all just acknowledge for a moment that this is weird. This looks weird, it feels weird, and even sounds weird,” Oliver said.

In a new segment on Monday night’s episode entitled, “Good News! You’re Not Paranoid,” Oliver discussed the National Security Agency’s (NSA) spying scandal publicized this past weekend, which occurred despite a “note” from Stewart saying that no big news stories occur during the summer. The other correspondents, including Jason Jones, Samantha Bee and Jessica Williams, were jokingly jealous and angry with Oliver and Stewart. Actor Seth Rogen was the night’s guest, promoting his new film This Is The End.

Oliver has been a correspondent – more specifically the ”Senior British Correspondent” – on the show since July 2006. Stewart has hosted the show since January 1999.

Oliver is taking over the hosting job for the summer while Stewart directs his first feature film. He will be hosting the show until Stewart returns on September 3. Stewart’s yet-unnamed film is based on Iranian journalist Maziar Bahari. Bahari was arrested a week after appearing in a segment on The Daily Show, and it’s suspected that his appearance on the show got him into trouble with the Iranian government.
