The Killing opened on Sunday with a car hitting a girl crossing a deserted street in the middle of the night. When he gets out of the car to check on her, she screams and runs off terrified. As he turns around to head back to his car, he spots a shadow of a man lurking next to it.

Meanwhile, back at Danette’s (Amy Seimetz) house, she tells Joe (Ryan Robbins) that she missed Kallie’s (Cate Sproule) call. She’s worried that Kallie’s disappearance could be more sinister than they suspect, but Joe reassures Danette that she’s probably fine before taking off for work.

At the station, Holder and Linden are interrogating hotel owner Mama Dips, who’s proving to be difficult to get anything out of. However, when they learn that Joe is her son, they realize it’s him that’s she protecting with her silence. Holder and Linden go to Danett’s place with a search warrant, but leave after realizing Joe's not there and finding nothing. On their way back to their car, Skinner (Elias Koteas) calls to tell them they might have an ID on the killer.

When Linden (Mireille Enos) and Holder (Joel Kinnaman) arrive at the scene of the accident, they talk to the driver who recounts the eerie incident. He tells them that after the girl ran into the woods, the guy she appeared to be running from followed her. As a search party and dogs scan the wooded area, Linden and Holder come across a red bag with blood on it. When they take their search to the streets, they find a finger lying on the ground. Bullet tries to help the policemen, suggesting that if it’s Kallie, he has a good idea where she’d go if she were looking to hide.

Holder, Linden and Bullet drive off to the location. When they get to the spot under a bridge, Holder goes to talk to Tank and his buddies. They tell him that they’d heard something that sounded like someone crying down by the river. He gets Linden and they walk down the embankment, where they find a large cement pipe with blood pooling at the bottom – but no Kallie. They surmise her captor dragged her out and carried her off. Bullet is discouraged, but calls the next day with another lead. It takes Linden and Holder to a veterinarian’s office. There, they find a vet stitching up a young girl – but it’s not Kallie. They arrest the vet and take the injured girl to the hospital.

Meanwhile, Seward (Peter Sarsgaard) is getting tips about how to shorten his sentence while working out with some fellow death row inmates at the prison. Apparently, meeting with their victim’s families can get their sentences reduced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. If he plans to give the scheme a try, he better work quickly, as Guard Becker is telling the guards they’ll be hanging him in two weeks time. Seward later gets a visit from his son Adrian’s foster mother. She tells him she'd like to adopt his son, and that Adrian forgives him and wants to pay him a visit. Seward laughs and hangs up.

Danette has been frantically looking all over the streets for Kallie, checking shelters and where the homeless kids hang out. When she returns home, she once again seeks Joe’s reassurance that Kallie is alright. After he soothes her, he goes off to take a shower. Danette decides to give Kallie’s cell phone one more try. After she dials, Kallie’s ringtone is heard coming from across the room – more specifically – from the pocket of Joe’s bag. As Danette picks up the phone in disbelief, the bathroom door opens and Joe paces towards her. Then the episode ends.

The Killing airs Sundays on AMC at 9/8c.
