Michael Boatwright, an American who once served in the Navy, awoke in a California hospital speaking only Swedish and with no recollection of who he was. He was brought to the hospital on Feb. 28 after being discovered unconscious in a local hotel room.

Boatwright, who now only responds to Johan Ek, has been diagnosed with Transient Global Amnesia, which is a disorder than hinders its sufferers from creating new memories, reported MyDesert.com. Doctors also speculate that Boatwright is currently in a dissociative fugue state that’s causing him to forget his past and assume a new personality.

The driver’s license Boatwright had on him at the time of his hospitalization said that he had been born in Florida. Boatwright does appear to have spent significant time in Sweden, as his online art portfolio states that he received his Masters from Stockholm University after receiving his Bachelors from Michigan State. He has been married twice, has a son and had spent the last decade living in Japan and China.

Though doctors can’t say with any certainty if Boatwright’s condition will only by temporary, it’s possible that it could subside within the next several months.
