For the first time in 39 years, Steven Spielberg will not be the director for the next Indiana Jones film. Spielberg directed each Indiana Jones film since the 1981 premiere of Raiders of the Arc. Variety reported that it was Spielberg's decision to leave the position, "in a desire to pass along Indy's whip to a new generation to bring their perspective to the story." However, he will still be involved with the film as a producer. Although a deal has not been confirmed, sources say that James Mangold will likely take his spot. He's been in this position before when he took over the Wolverine franchise.
