Edgar Ramirez, who stars in the 2016 film Gold, opened up to uInterview about filming his role in an exclusive video interview.

Describing his character Michael Acosta, Ramirez said, “He’s a dreamer, he’s a geologist that teams up with Matthew McConaughey‘s character Kenny Wells to go to the jungles of Indonesia to find what they think is the largest gold find in the world, in the history of mining.”

He then added, with a bit of dramatic flair: “And it turns out to be a little bit different to that. So that’s their adventure.”

Filming for the movie, however, was not without its hazards. Though the movie takes place in Indonesia, filming took place in Thailand.

“We were shooting in the wilderness, and you gotta be ready for everything… We were in this little hut, and suddenly we started to listen to this weird sound…and it happened to be a rock slide, and it almost killed us,” Ramirez said. “We grabbed the kid and his mother and the cinematographer and the director and we jumped out of the hut. And it was crushed by the rockslide.”

The harrowing conditions in Thailand, however, helped the actors get into their character’s mindset.

“We dealt with the most whimsical weather conditions while we were shooting in the jungle,” said Ramirez. “Every time we’d come to set, the water had risen 10 feet, 20 feet, 30 feet and we would lose all the locations on the sets… So we came to set as disoriented as these characters were. So the struggle that we went through was very similar to the struggle that our characters went through to find gold.”

Ramirez’s co-star, Matthew McConaughey, plays an unlucky businessman in the film, looking to make it big by uncovering gold. The two apparently had great rapport on set and off set.

“The whole shoot in the jungle was really fun and it was really adventurous,” gushed Ramirez. “I remember having a glass of wine, just talking to Matthew in the middle of the jungle at night, with all the sounds of the jungle…. In the trailer, when we’re certain that we found the gold mine, and Matthew’s coming, he’s waking up from the fever dream, and he hugged me, and he’s all fat and all sweaty and wearing the horrible white underwear. That was a memorable moment, to hold a Matthew McConaughey weighing three times more than what he normally weighs, that was really fun.

Q: What is your character's role in the film? -

He's a dreamer, he's a geologist that teams up with Matthew McConaughey's character Kenny Wells (?) to go to the jungles of Indonesia to find what they think is the largest gold find in the world, in the history of mining. And it turns out to be a little bit different to that. So that's their adventure."

Q: You were almost killed in a rockslide. What happened? -

We were shooting in the wilderness, and you gotta be ready for everything. There was this really beautiful scene with a kid, with an indigenous kid, an indigenous family, in the jungle of Thailand, where we had the luck and privilege to shoot. We were in this little hut, and suddenly we started to listen to this weird sound, none of us had heard that before, and it happened to be a rock slide, and it almost killed us. We saw all the Thai crew screaming in Thai, we couldn't understand what they were saying, but we understood the urgency of getting out of that hut. So we grabbed the kid and his mother and the cinematographer and the director and we jumped out of the hut. And it was crushed by the rockslide.

Q: What were the conditions like in Thailand? -

We dealt with the most whimsical weather conditions while we were shooting in the jungle. We had to get on our canoes and just go down the river and try to find new locations because every time we'd come to set, the water had risen 10 feet, 20 feet, 30 feet and we would lose all the locations on the sets that we had built on the day before. So that happened every day. So we came to set as disoriented as these characters were. So the struggle that we went through was very similar to the struggle that our characters went through to find gold.

Q: What was the most memorable moment with Matthew McConaughey? -

The whole shoot in the jungle was really fun and it was really adventurous. We had many moments. Matthew and I, there were moments where we had to stay in trailers in the jungle to make the hours and just to get into our characters. So I remember having a glass of wine, just talking to Matthew in the middle of the jungle at night, with all the sounds of the jungle. It was really cool. It was one of those movies. It felt like we were doing a movie in the seventies. The Golden Era of American Cinema, it felt like all those old classic Hollywood films. And I feel very privileged. We had amazing moments. In the trailer, when we're certain that we found the gold mine, and Matthew's coming, he's waking up from the fever dream, and he hugged me, and he's all fat and all sweaty and wearing the horrible white underwear. That was a memorable moment, to hold a Matthew McConaughey weighing three times more than what he normally weighs, that was really fun. There was a great chemistry between us, and it was a very fun shoot. It was challenging, but it was fun.
