A Swiss rainforest charity has urged actor Leonardo DiCaprio to step down from his UN role as Messenger of Peace for climate change. They said that he “simply lacks the credibility for this role,” and pointed to DiCaprio’s alleged connection to a corruption scandal contributing to deforestation.

The charity, called the Bruno Manser Funds, issued a statement at a press conference in London, urging the actor to either resign from his post or break his ties with the 1MDB wealth fund.

“If DiCaprio is unwilling to come clean, we ask him to step down as UN Messenger for Peace for climate change, because he simply lacks the credibility for such an important role,” said Lukas Straumann, director of the Swiss charity.

“We can’t save the environment if we fail to stop corruption,” said Straumann, who called DiCaprio’s criticism of deforestation in Borneo areas under Indonesian control, “cynical hypocrisy.”

“He needs to become part of the solution,” he said. “But today he is part of the problem.”
