On Friday, Muhammad Ali passed away at the age of 74. The news sparked a great deal of social media activity – including a controversial tweet from Piers Morgan.

When the tweet yielded outraged responses, Morgan readdressed the statement.

Morgan included in his tweets a tribute to Ali from his column on the website Daily Mail, but not before John Legend responded to the following tweet.

Chrissy Teigen entered the conversation responding to her husband with:

This served as the beginning of a Twitter war between Morgan and Teigen. Morgan fired back with a response to Teigen.

Tiegen references the surprising end of the 1999 film The Sixth Sense.

In response to the backlash, Morgan followed up with another post on Daily Mail titled, “Muhammad Ali WAS a racist who repented. Trump ISN’T a racist but he too needs to sing a more tolerant tune.”

In the column, Morgan explains that the initial tweet was prompted by reactions to Donald Trump‘s tribute to Ali. One social media Trump, was being bashed by a “howling mob who believe that Trump’s a racist Hitler-esque Muslim-hater and therefore had to be mocked and abused for his ‘sickening hypocrisy’,” according to Morgan.

He continued, “I didn’t intend to disrespect Ali with my tweet, as many claimed… But I did intend to offer the anti-Trump brigade some historical perspective about their own hero as they vented their collective spleen.”

Morgan defends his original tweets, stating “Frankly, Ali’s statements during his 10-year status as the group’s most famous ‘frontman’ were not just outrageously racist but also anti-Semitic, sexist and homophobic.”

The article closes with the idea that Ali was once an extremist who’s ideals evolved over the years and Trump should take heed of this path as he moves into the final lap of the election.

But the column was not enough to end the Twitter feud. Teigen’s and Morgan continued to exchange insults.
