'Green Lantern' Tops Box Office, Knocks Out 'Super 8'

The Ryan Reynolds' starrer Green Lantern knocked JJ Abrams’ Super 8 out of the top spot this week, grossing $52.7 million on its opening weekend. However, Super 8 didn’t go too far down, taking the number two spot with $21.

The score is cheesy, the plot progresses through clunky exposition, and the characters are simplistic, but good luck trying not to tear up at the last scene. Director/writer JJ Abrams and producer/mentor Steven Spielberg’s Super 8 lacks the sophistication of the post-millennial sci-fi genre, but more than makes up for it with the wicked combination of unreal special effects and expertly delivered sentimentality.

'Super 8' Beats 'X-Men' At The Box Office

J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi thriller Super 8 topped the box office on its first weekend, making $37 million. It knocked X-Men: First Class out of first place, although the James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender movie still grossed $25 million in second place.
