It seems like it was only yesterday that I was sending messages on AOL instant messenger (AIM) to friends such as Shawty722 and Life Toasty on a school night, asking them if they wanted to play Defense of the Ancients (DotA). DotA, a wildly popular online multiplayer mod created for Blizzard’s Warcraft III, consumed our high school lives. Had an hour to spare? Play a game of DotA. Wanted to procrastinate on a homework assignment? Sign into Warcraft III to play DotA. Years later, having just graduated from college, only some things have changed.
2012 seems to be stacking up to be a great year for video game releases. There are numerous highly-anticipated games and each one brings something new to the table. Some games are just sequels, adding to existing legacies, and others are being released from limbo following a resolution in licensing agreements. Games seem to be looking towards a bright future so, with that in mind; here is a look at five highly-anticipated games coming your way hopefully before year's end: Assassin's Creed III Since 2007, Assassin’s Creed has been a series that has been successful both commercially and critically.
In the last few years, gamers have become increasingly more demanding of their developers. This is in part due to the amount of patching (bugs in the game that are fixed via the instillation of additional software after the game has been bought and paid for by the customer), and downloadable content (DLC – add-ons for each title that open up content, for a fee of course). Now, due to the explosive controversy brought about by the disappointment over the ending of marquee title Mass Effect 3 gamers are seemingly free to hound developers into changing the ending to an entire franchise if they do not happen to enjoy the one that they originally had in mind.
In 2009 the fighting game genre was reborn by Capcom’s flagship title Street Fighter IV. The six million copies sold from this series alone made it only natural to create a crossover game to end all crossover games. Working with Tekken and Soul Calibur developer, and longtime rival Namco, the unlikely bedfellows announced that they would each be making games featuring characters from both houses’ respective series thrown together. Street Fighter X Tekken is Capcom’s contribution to this venture with the Namco version has yet to begin development.
With the release date of March 6th drawing ever closer, the gaming world is collectively awaiting with baited breath Bioware’s Mass Effect 3, the epic conclusion to their stunning science-fiction trilogy. A futuristic world-at-war saga, the Mass Effect series follows the interstellar exploits of Commander Shepard, a rugged, veteran soldier cleaving his way through a galaxy populated by deadly extraterrestrial creatures, and squabbling space aristocracy with the ultimate survival of the very universe at stake.
Ah, Baseball; the crack of the bat, the smell of the glove, the love of the game. Of course, that bares little resemblance to the reality of multi-million dollar contracts, steroid scandals, and twelve-dollar beers that are the harsh corporate reality of the modern sport. But there are still some purists out there. Chief amongst them, 2K Games, who have just released the teaser trailer for Major League Baseball 2K12, due to arrive on March 6th for Xbox360, PS3, PC, Nintendo Wii, DS, and Sony PSP.
