'The Hunger Games' DVD Satisfies Our Appetite For More
09/04/2012
Fans began pre-ordering copies of The Hunger Games in late May, but it wasn't until August 18 that Lionsgate released the anticipated Blu-ray and DVD editions. It was the studio's largest home entertainment release ever, selling nearly four million copies in its first week alone, with nearly a third of those coming from Blu-ray sales. For any die-hard fan, it was no doubt worth the wait. The two-disc Blu-ray edition includes both the feature film with a digital copy and a second disc with over three hours of bonus features.

'Battleship' – Is It Seaworthy?
08/31/2012
The premise of Battleship is a fairly straightforward one: six years after NASA sends a signal into deep space looking to contact intelligent life, aliens come to Earth hell bent on world destruction, using the ocean as a launching point to carry out their plan. Sadly, this isn't the reason that this movie was not enjoyable to watch. There were several good summer blockbusters in 2012, among them The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises. Both had excellent scripts, intense action and charismatic characters that jumped off the screen, in large part due to wise casting choices.

'Grimm' Masters The Supernatural
08/09/2012
The second season of NBC’s emerging cult favorite Grimm is fast approaching, but fans and curious newcomers might do well to catch-up on season 1 episodes before embarking on the sequel — available now on DVD and Blu-ray. Dark, seductive, and enthralling, Grimm’s fairy tales have never been broached so ambitiously as here. The 22-episode, 5-disc set is currently being distributed in limited edition packaging and includes never-before-seen bonus material, which rounds out the not-so grim experience.

'LOL' – Funny For The Wrong Reasons
08/07/2012
Full of cliches, predictable storylines and uninspired dialogue, LOL, starring Miley Cyrus and Demi Moore, is “laugh out loud” funny for all of the wrong reasons. Instead of falling under the expected “so bad it's good” category, it remained fixedly in “so bad” territory. LOL tells the story of a teenage girl, Lola, who is looking for the typical adolescent trifecta — love, freedom, oneself — while trying to navigate the difficulties of friendship and family.

John Carter
06/11/2012
It’s something or a cruel irony that, despite being the first space-faring adventurer – predating the likes of Flash Gordon and James T. Kirk by several decades – Edgar Rice Burroughs’ heroic Civil War veteran-turned-Martian savior, John Carter, will likely be remembered more for the $200 million hole blown in the Disney balance sheet than for his enduring influence on the genre heralded by his arrival. Though largely uncelebrated upon initial publication (the series only gained notoriety after Burroughs newfound fame over Tarzan), Burroughs’ swashbuckling, otherworldly adventure solidly laid the groundwork for virtually everything that has come since.

Safe House Blu-ray
06/04/2012
A product born of the infamous ‘black list’ – the informal name given to what are allegedly the ten best screenplays currently sat idle – Swedish helmer Daniel Espinosa’s English language debut is a gritty, arresting tale of duplicitous double-dealing in the international espionage community. It’s one that doesn’t so much owe Paul Greesgrass’ Jason Bourne movies a wink and a nod as an all expenses paid weekend trip for two to Paris. Of course, despite what movies and TV would have us believe, most Agency folk aren’t Jason Bourne or Evelyn Salt.
