VIDEO: Young Rapper Lil JaXe Overcomes Stutter When He Raps
Lil JaXe, 13, also known as Jake Zeldin, has had a severe stutter for years that has led to him being bullied by classmates and even teachers, until he discovered that the stutter disappears when he raps.
In a cover story for CNN's "Human Factor " segment, Lil JaXe wrote about his experience overcoming his troubles by rapping and how he took the stage to perform at the We Day event in Toronto, Ontario last week.
"September 28, 2012, was the most awesome moment that I have ever experienced in my whole entire life. My first reaction was that I was so excited. I could not wait to get to the Air Canada Center and rock the stage," he wrote. "After two weeks of practicing, I was about to go on the same stage as Jay-Z, Kanye West, Elton John and all of my other favorites. So many emotions were running through my head."
Lil JaXe, whose raps have been well "liked" on YouTube for months, was nervous, but he overcame because of his passion and determination. "I started thinking about how different my life was a year ago — how it was so hard to get through a day because of the way people teased me and bullied me. All I wanted to do was to show people how well I could rap. It was the only thing I wanted to do."
Lil JaXe, who wears a baseball cap that says "I Heart Haters" on top and "Motivation" under the brim, felt a responsibility to perform on We Day, which is dedicated to inspriing young people to act toward local and global change through music and performance. As predicted, his performance was a huge hit with the crowd.
"When you finally find your voice, you can't wait to use it," he said.
