Yoji Asano, a one-time American Idol hopeful, has been charged with attempted rape in Manhattan, police confirmed on Tuesday.

Yoji ‘Pop’ Asano Arrested For Attempted Rape

Asano became a viral sensation after his all around awful audition for American Idol aired in 2011. Now, Asano, 29, who famously sang Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the U.S.A” under the stage name Yoji ‘Pop’ Asano, reportedly spent the weekend in jail after being arrested for attacking a female friend in her apartment.

The alleged assault took place on the night of Aug. 24, 2014, when the victim, 25, allowed Asano to stay at her apartment for the night. She claims that Asano snuck into her bedroom in the middle of the night and tried to have sex with her, laying down on top of her. The woman was able to fight him off, and says Asano fled the scene.

Police arrested Asano Thursday and promptly charged the reality television alum with attempted rape and attempted sex abuse. He remained in jail over the weekend and was released after posting a $2,500 bail on Monday.

Years after his disastrous American Idol audition, Asano is still chasing the superstar dream. Days before the alleged assault, Asano performed at the 2014 Amateur Night at Apollo Theater.
