The ever candid Will Smith opened up to Entertainment Tonight about his 20 year marriage to Jada Pinkett Smith and certainly didn’t mince his words when describing the occasional difficulties of their two-decade long union.

Will Smith Says Marriage To Jada Pinkett Smith ‘Grueling’

Smith, 47, speaking on the red carpet for the premiere of his latest flick Concussion, had this to say when asked what their secret was to remaining committed for so long.

“We’ve been married 20 years and we’ve been asking ourselves, and really at the end of the day it’s just not quitting,” the actor said of Pinkett Smith, who he began dating in 1995 and then married two years later. “You can’t expect it to be easy, it’s like our marriage was the most difficult, grueling, excruciating thing that we have ever taken on in our lives. And you know were just not quitters.”

“If there is a secret I would say is that we never went into working in our relationship,” he added. “We only ever worked on ourselves individually, and then presented ourselves to one another better than we were previously.”

There had been much speculation earlier this year on whether or not the two were headed for separation. The rumors became so heated that Smith felt the need to address them publicly and wrote in a Facebook post, “I promise you all if I ever decide to divorce my Queen, I swear I’ll tell you myself!” The couple has two children: son Jaden Smith, 17, and daughter Willow Smith, 15.

Smith stars in Concussion as real life doctor, Dr. Bennet Omalu, a forensic neuropathologist who takes on the NFL when he discovers the link between the sport and chronic traumatic encephalopathy in football players.
