Alex Hribal, a 16-year-old student at Franklin Regional Senior High School in Murrysville Pennsylvania, wielded a knife and stabbed and slashed at whomever crossed his path Wednesday morning, ultimately wounding 20 students and a school security officer.

Who Is Alex Hribal?

Hribal’s motive is still a mystery to law enforcement, his parents and the student body. It’s not believed that he was bullied, had a troubled home life or had any obvious reason for committing his vicious attack.

"He's a typical young kid. He's a B+ student. The family is like Ozzie and Harriet. They have dinner together every night," Hribal’s attorney, Patrick Thomassey told CNN. "All the students liked him. He wasn't a loner. He worked well in groups, and this happened. So there's a reason for it — that's what I'm saying. And we have to get to the bottom of that.”

"I'm not sure he knows what he did, quite frankly," Thomassey added, revealing that Hribel would be evaluated by a psychiatrist to determine his mental state. "He's scared. He's a young kid. He's 16, looks like he's 12. I mean, he's a very young kid, and he's never been in trouble, so this is all new to him."

Students who regularly encountered Hribal were stunned to realize it was him who committed the violent act at their school. Though he was a relatively quiet kid, he seemed nice in conversation. "From past experiences with him, he hasn't been violent at all. He's actually been a really nice kid from all the times I've talked to him. He was just more of a shy kid, and kept to himself," said student Mia Meixner. "He was nice whenever you would talk to him. I never thought anything bad would happen with him."

Hrbial has been charged as an adult with four counts of attempted homicide and 21 counts of aggravated assault. He is being held at a juvenile detention center without bail.
