'The Voice' Recap: Sisaundra Lewis Stuns In Part 3 Of The Blind Auditions
The Voice blind auditions continued, with showstopper Sisaundra Lewis getting the coveted four-chair turn around and 'The Brothers Walker,' an identical twin duo, making it on Team Usher.
The Voice blind auditions part 3 kicked off with a four-chair turn around for Ryan Whyte Maloney, 33. A rocker currently trying to make it in Las Vegas, Maloney got Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Shakira to turn around almost right away with his rendition of Journey’s “Lights.” Usher followed towards the end of the song, but it didn’t matter. In the end, Maloney went with Blake because he said, that’s what his son would tell him to do.
Next up was the sweet family guy, Deshawn Washington, 23, who left college after one semester to help take care of his family. Deshawn brought some fun and light to The Voice stage with “Twistin’ the Night Away” by Sam Cooke. Surprisingly, Shakira was the only coach that turned around. When the song had finished, Adam, Usher and Blake were all kicking themselves for not turning around, telling Deshawn that he truly represented old soul. Usher feels particularly dumb for not hitting his button and swears he’ll jump on Deshawn if he is put up for a steal.
Nanny and English Lit major Sam Behymer, 25, jumped on the Lorde train, singing the young star’s trademark song, “Royals.” Sam gets Adam and Usher to turn around. It’s clear from the package that The Voice wants Sam to be a fan favorite. She even gets an intimate one-on-one interview with host Carson Daly. She tears up when she talks about what being on The Voice would mean to her: a chance to show her parents that singing can be a career path, instead of the road to graduate school she’s currently on.
The debate for Sam was fun, as Blake took the opportunity to heckle Adam, weighing in on Usher’s side during the heated campaigning for Sam. In the end, Adam convinced her to pick him when he told her that she didn’t remind him of any other artist.
What followed was a quick montage of failed auditions, most with constructive feedback from Usher encouraging them to come back next season.
Brendan Ryan, 24, is sure to be a hit with the viewers. In college, Brendan got into improve comedy, and has been trying to make it as a singer for the last year with the support of his parents. Brendan did a guitar version of Beyoncé’s “Love on Top.” The coaches all thought he was a girl from just the sound of his voice, and Brendan failed to get a coach to turn around, but perhaps we’ll see him again. Blake admitted to Brendan that he should have pushed his button and all coaches instructed him to return with a better song choice.
Then there were ‘The Brothers Walker,’ an identical twin duo composed of Cody, 26, and Clint Walker, “26 plus 3 minutes.” The adorably charming, hipster twins, who sang “Keep Me in Mind” by Zac Brown Band, ended up convincing Usher to press his button – with his foot no less. The brothers end up on Team Usher by default, and Usher was as surprised as anybody that he got a country duo on his team.
(Quick tip on how to tell the two apart: Cody has thick, fully rimmed, square glasses and a slightly longer beard, and Clint’s glasses are semi-rimless with smaller lenses. Also, for the purposes of this blind audition only, Cody is wearing a sweater and Clint is wearing a vest.)
Clarissa Serna, 27, got the elusive four-chair turn around with her performance of The Cranberries’ “Zombie.” Adam turns first, followed by Shakira, Blake and Usher.
Clarissa, a fun spunky girl, spends her time volunteering with Chicas Rock, a local music group that introduces girls to rock music and helps instill confidence in them, something Clarissa says she wished she had at their age. The coaches campaign heavily for Clarissa, but, in the end, girl power, or “Latina soul sister,” wins out and Clarissa joins Team Shakira.
In a montage of successful auditions, we see Adam pick up soul singer Joshua Howard and Usher grab Tanner James.
Shakira also gets an artist during the montage, pop singer Lindsay Pagano, who some may remember from her 2006 hit “Everything U R,” which was featured in AOL commercials. Pagano also recorded a duet with Sir Paul McCartney for her debut album called “So Bad.”
Robert Lee, a 29-year-old mailman with a 7-year-old daughter and twins on the way, tried to get the judges to turn around with his country performance of “The Weight” by The Band. Unfortunately, no coaches pushed their buttons and they sent Robert home.
In addition to Lindsay Pagano, Melissa Jimenez, 29, has come to The Voice after previously having a record deal. Melissa, or ‘MJ,’ kicked off her audition of “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys with a few a cappella bars and then switched from English to Spanish. Shakira and Usher double dare each other to turn around, and Melissa chooses Team Usher.
Patrick Thomson, 35, inspired coaches Adam and Blake to get into a great debate over him with his audition of “Can’t You See” by The Marshall Tucker Band. Blake and Adam got a bit ridiculous, as is their way, especially when Usher decided to weigh in and tell Patrick to go with Team Adam. Eventually, Patrick followed Usher’s advice and chose Adam, even though Blake was doing the pointing thing he does when he really wants somebody.
Another montage of rejections is followed up by the complete rejected audition from Allison Bray, 17. Allison went with “Where The Boys Are” by Connie Francis, but she failed to make the cut.
The Voice saved the best for last with Sisaundra Lewis, 44, who was once a vocal director for Celine Dion. Sisaundra auditioned with a risky Aretha Franklin track, “Ain’t No Way.” Shakira, Adam, Blake and finally, Usher, all turned around for Sisaundra’s stunning vocals. Sisaundra decided to trump expectations, going with Team Blake.
The Voice blind auditions continue Tuesday at 8 p.m. on NBC.
