'The Vampire Diaries'™ Recap: Katherine Takes Over Elena; Caroline & Stefan Bond

The Vampire Diaries picked up on Thursday with Katherine’s spirit occupying Elena’s body while she tries to learn as much as she can about her identical twin sister from Matt.

'The Vampire Diaries' Recap

Katherine (Nina Dobrev) only reveals her true self after stripping Matt (Zach Roerig) of his vervain bracelet. Without any other options, Matt gives Katherine all the information she asks for, including who Elena (Dobrev) counts as her best friends and why she broke up with matt.

Meanwhile, Nadia (Olga Fonda) is trying to get her hands on Katherine’s corpse, since Mia (Taylor Treadwell) claims that she needs it in order to pull off the body-snatching successfully. She arrives at the Salvatore Mansion just after Damon (Ian Somerhalder) has come back from burying Katherine’s body. Nadia claims Katherine wants it buried in Bulgaria, but Damon refuses to hand the body over and the two get into a physical brawl.

A depressed Tyler (Michael Trevino), holed up in his mansion, works on getting drunk. Matt, not impressed with Tyler’s method of coping, tells him to clean up the house and get ready to throw a party. At college, Caroline (Candice Accola) is also cleaning. When Aaron (Shaun Sipos) comes by, he asks her if she could pass the message onto Elena that he’s going to cut off the money to the Augustines since he’s just come into his trust fund.

Stefan Wants Elena & Damon Back Together

Caroline also gets a mission from Stefan (Paul Wesley), who – much to her surprise – wants Elena and Damon to get back together. Why? He believes that the love of his life makes his brother happy, and therefore keeps him from killing innocent people. With that in mind, Caroline understands where Stefan is coming from. What she doesn’t understand is why Elena has been lying to everyone about where she’s been staying.

Later on, Caroline meets up with Stefan and Damon at The Grill. None of them have been able to get into contact with Elena and are growing concerned. When Damon returns to the Salvatore Mansion, he finds Enzo (Michael Malarkey) there with Aaron. Enzo details the feud between Damon and the Whitmores, and offers up Aaron for slaughter. Instead of killing Aaron, he snaps Enzo’s neck and follows Caroline out the door to Tyler’s party, where she says Elena is. Stefan, meanwhile, reveals to an annoyed Katherine where he thinks Damon may have left her body.

Trying not to draw too much attention, Katherine – still posing as Elena – takes out the garbage at the party and has a quick chat with Nadia. When she goes back inside, Caroline wants to have a heart-to-heart about having slept with Klaus (Joseph Morgan). Working her conniving magic, Katherine asks Caroline to compare sex with Klaus to sex with Tyler as the latter was passing by.

When Caroline runs after Tyler, she finds him drinking. He yells at her to leave and lists off all the people Klaus has murdered. He gets his wolf on to frighten Caroline, who still doesn't budge. When Stefan comes in to stop the madness, Tyler reveals to him that Caroline slept with Klaus. When Caroline skulks away, Stefan reprimands Tyler for how he’s acting.

Katherine Steals Elena's Body

At the tomb, Mia cuts into Elena and then slices into Katherine to draw blood. While Mia is chanting, Elena comes out and impersonates Katherine, fooling Mia. After a few moments of waiting, she knocks out Mia and then rams a stake into Nadia’s stomach before taking off. What she doesn’t realize is that her body isn’t needed for the spell to be complete. When Mia comes to, she starts to finished the spell. Just as Elena leaps into Damon’s arms outside the party, she’s overtaken by Katherine’s spirit.

Unbeknownst to Damon, who is still professing his love for her and desire to have her back in his life, it’s Katherine he’s speaking to. She responds to his speech by telling him that they’re done for good. She (Katherine/Elena) doesn’t want to be his sole reason for living – and in a breakup – the cause of him sinking back into complete monster mode. Stefan hears the whole thing.

Back at the party, Tyler is opening up to Matt about his feelings regarding his life. Yes, he lives in a mansion, which is great – but his parents are dead. There’s also that thing about his ex-girlfriend having sex with Klaus – his arch-nemesis from New Orleans. With an endless life ahead of him, he’s not quite sure what to do with it. Matt does his best to sooth his pal and give him hope for the insurmountable amount of tomorrows in store for him.

Mia tries unsuccessfully to get Katherine to pay her for successfully getting her into Elena’s body. She gets her heart ripped out instead. Then Nadia tries to get Katherine to leave town. Katherine, in disguise as Elena, thinks it might be nice to stick around – and for Nadia to stick around with her. She wants her daughter and Stefan.

After leaving Tyler’s party, Caroline heads over to the Salvatore Mansion, seeking some comfort from Stefan. First he tries relating her sleeping with Klaus to him getting with Katherine. When that doesn’t work, he jokingly tells her just how horrible she is, which finally gets his friend to lighten up and laugh it off.

Driving in the dark, Aaron spots Enzo in the middle of the road and gets out to see if he’s all right. Damon then emerges and gets into a conversation with Aaron about Elena. Admitting that Elena thinks he’s a monster, he digs his fangs into Aaron’s neck and drinks.

The Vampire Diaries airs on The CW Thursdays at 8/7c.
