The director of The King’s Speech and Le Miserable, Tom Hooper, has recently unveiled the trailer for his new film. The Danish Girl is based on the book by David Ebershoff and is a love story about Lili Elbe (Eddie Redmayne) and Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander).

Taking place in Denmark around the turn of the 20th Century, a young couple is faced with challenging circumstances when Redmayne’s character discovers that he is happier living out his life as a woman. A recent press release states that, “Lili and Gerda’s marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.”

Lili and Gerda are happy with their lives together. Then when Gerda, a painter, decides to use her husband as a model using a dress draped over his body, everything changes. One thing leads to another, and soon they are going to parties with the newly dubbed “Lili” in full female clothing and wig. Redmaynes character comes to the realization that he is in fact a woman and must pursue femininity as a permanent lifestyle.

The story heats up as the lead character must face the possibility of dying during a procedure that will bring him closer to being the person that he needs to be. Gerda, whose love and dedication to the person she married, acknowledges the validity of the her husbands wants. She decides to stay with Lili and support her through it all.

The story has the potential to be a groundbreaking cinematic experience in which the viewers are enlightened to the struggles of the transgender community. Eddie Redmayne, who seems to have a passion for films pertaining to romances that face serious struggle, is sure to bolster his reputation as an actor up for any challenge.

The Danish Girl will appear in select theatres on Nov. 27 and additional cities Dec. 2015.
