SPOILERS: 'Game Of Thrones' Casting Call Seeks Amputees For Specific Scene
The lauded HBO series Game of Thrones, starring Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Jack Gleeson, Sophie Turner and Richard Madden, which will return to its adoring fans in 2013, has broken a lot of boundaries in both its storylines and its filming — including a scene in which a decapitated head the likeness of President George Bush showed up on a spike near Ned Stark's in the first season — and now the series is pushing the envelope when it comes to casting calls for extras, too.
Filming on the third season of Game of Thrones began yesterday in Ireland, reports NBC Bay Area, and directors Daniel Minahan and David Nutter are itching to make the death, destruction, blood and gore even more realistic in their filming of the infamous (to those who have read the George R. R. Martin A Song of Ice and Fire book series), "Red Wedding" scene. "Seeking leg only, male amputees," read one casting notice for the scene, requesting "a clear description regarding where your limb is missing eg. at knee, at ankle, etc."
The phrasing did at least recognize that this was an uncommon — and could perhaps be perceived as an insensitive — request, so it goes on to say, "You must be OK and comfortable with filming a scene within the context of a battle where your leg has been injured... We understand that this is not for everyone, so please only apply if you are happy to participate."
If the bloody and pivotal "Red Wedding" scene plays out the way it did in Martin's third novel, A Storm of Swords, hundreds of extras could be required.
Season three of Game of Thrones, which will reportedly cover only about half of the third novel, will premiere on HBO on March 31, 2013.
