Sean Penn's New Film, 'Gangster Squad,' May Be Postponed
Sean Penn, 51, who recently completed a 36-hour anger management class that was part of a court order for his 2009 attack on a photographer in Los Angeles in which Penn broke the man's camera, may have something new to get angry about — it seems that Warner Bros. may postpone the arrival of its new flick, Gangster Squad, in light of the recent The Dark Knight Rises shootings that rocked Aurora, Colorado last week.
Trailers for Gangster Squad, a shoot 'em up that stars Penn and Ryan Gosling and tells the story of the 1940s struggle to keep the mafia out of Los Angles, were set to premiere before the screenings of The Dark Knight Rises across the country, but were already pulled from the big screen, as well as certain television networks.
Now it looks like Warner Bros. might actually go back and change the violence in the film itself, reports the Celebrity Cafe, re-editing or deleting the more violent scenes that include machine gun fire that appears to go through the movie theater screen toward the audience. The re-edits could push back the movie's scheduled September 7 release date.
Penn was married to actress Robin Wright, 46, for 14 years and together for 6 more before revealing in 2010 shortly after their split that Wright had become "a ghost to me now," he told Vanity Fair. "We spent all those years together ... Now she's just gone," he said of his ex-wife.
At the time, Penn tried to channel his new single status into constructive efforts, not just work. "I was for 20 years in a relationship with Robin and 18 years with children. I didn't have time to commit to anything — for real — in places like Iraq, except to denounce the war. But now I'm single. I can lend a hand."
Penn has since talked about Wright infrequently, merely saying last year that he "got taken for one half of everything I had in the divorce." Since his divorce from Wright, he has been romantically linked to Ryan Reynolds' ex, Scarlett Johansson and Stacey Koplin.
Gangster Squad also stars Emma Stone, Giovanni Ribisi, Josh Brolin, Nick Nolte, Michael Pena and Anthony Mackie.
