Ryan Gosling flaunts his abs in stills from his new film The Place Beyond the Pines, which was released nationwide yesterday with a new '5 Star Review' TV spot.

Last year it was Crazy Stupid Love; this year it's The Place Beyond the Pines that has everybody talking about his toned physique. Gosling tends to receive the attention placed on his abs with a grounded sense of humor.

“After a while they’re like pets because they don’t do anything useful. But you have to feed them and take care of them otherwise they’ll go away. I feel a bit goofy having them, to tell you the truth,” he told Australia's Herald Sun. "[Working out is] really quite pointless, because you go to a gym and you lift a heavy thing so a muscle grows, but the only thing the muscle can actually do is to lift that heavy thing.”

Gosling also admitted that while he has good genes and does eat well and workout to maintain his abs, that the superhuman appearance they have in films is "absolutely photoshopped" in an interview with the U.K.'s The Metro. "And as a by-product, you have to talk about your abdomen to complete strangers on a daily basis," he added.

One person he might not have expected to have to discuss his abdominal muscles with is fellow actor James Franco. In an article about The Place Beyond the Pines called "Burning for Gosling" for HuffPost Today, Franco exposed that even he wasn't immune to focusing on Gosling's midsection. He wrote that in the first image of the film, "Gos's toned six-pack, framed tight so that his head is cut off in order to focus our attention on the full spread of idiosyncratic tattoos and the impressive opening and closing of a butterfly knife, a skill Gosling mastered."
