Ricky Gervais Fights With Golden Globes' Producers
Ricky Gervais, 49, doesn't know when to quit.
The British comedian revealed on Tuesday that, despite the admonishing he received for insulting figures like Angelina Jolie, Robert Downey, Jr. and even God while hosting the Golden Globes this January, the awards show's organizers had asked him to consider coming back next year.
"The response was staggering," Gervais wrote in the U.K.'s Heat Magazine. "It was discussed on every news channel and chat show for weeks. The ratings went up again, and the organisers asked me to consider a third year. I don't think I should. I don't know what I could do better. I certainly couldn't get more press for them, that's for sure," Gervais said about the broadcast, which was watched by almost 17 million people.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which runs the Globes, however, isn't having it. "There is no truth to this rumor. We have not asked him to come back. Nice try, Ricky," Phillip Berk, the president of HFPA, said in a statement, reports UsWeekly.
Gervais took to his blog to clear things up. "You may ... have read that I am hosting next year's Golden Globes. This is not true. Not yet anyway. The TV show organisers said they were happy with everything and asked me not to rule out a third gig. However, it is not entirely up to them," Gervais wrote, indicating that HFPA was not on board.
If he does end up being invited back, he's issuing the same warning. "I'm going to pull exactly the same sh-- again or even worse." —ISHITA SINGH
