Prince William Becomes Rescue Pilot

Prince William Becomes Rescue Pilot

09/17/2010

Just call him Flight Lieutenant William Wales. The man better known as Prince William has earned his wings as a search and rescue pilot after completing his training for the Royal Air Force.

The training, which included 50 hours of simulation and 70 hours of flying, has left the prince, 28, with the ability to engage in rescue missions all over the country as part of a four-man crew. As the next in line for the throne, William would not be allowed on the frontline, as his brother Harry was in Afghanistan.

"The course has been challenging, but I have enjoyed it immensely," he said in a statement. "I absolutely love flying, so it will be an honor to serve operationally with the search and rescue force, helping to provide such a vital emergency service." Prince William will be based in the RAF Valley in Wales for a three-year tour of duty. –AMY LEE
