Condoms filled with liquid cocaine were intercepted by German customs officials while on their way to the Vatican.

A package filled with 12 ounces of liquid cocaine – worth an estimated 40,000 euros or $55,000 – was discovered by German customs at Leipzig/Halle Airport.

According to reports, the package was mailed from somewhere in South America in January and was addressed to the Vatican post office. Any 800 residents of Vatican City could have theoretically collected the cocaine. The Germans handed over the package to the Vatican police, who staged a sting operation in the hopes of finding out who the package was meant for. However, nobody ever came for the package, making authorities believe that either the person in question was tipped off, or the package was meant as a trap to frame whoever would receive it at the Vatican post office.

The investigation is ongoing.
