Oregon Teen Grant Alan Acord Arrested For Bomb Possession, Suffers From Rare From Of OCD

05/28/2013

Grant Alan Acord, a 17-year-old high school student in Oregon, was discovered to be in the possession of 6 homemade bombs after a tip led Albany authorities to his home where they found the bombs hidden in his bedroom.

Acord, a student at West Albany High School, was arrested on Thursday and was charged as an adult on one count of aggravated attempted murder and six counts of: manufacturing a destructive device, possession of a destructive device and possession of a weapon with intent to use it against another person.

When investigators raided Acord’s bedroom in his mother’s home, they found the homemade bombs stored under floorboards. They also uncovered a diagram of Acord’s high school, a plan and checklists, according to the Wall Street Journal. Attorney John Haroldson told the newspaper that Acord’s plan was “specially modeled after Columbine.”

Columbine, the devastating school shooting in 1999, saw two students murder 13 of their classmates and wound 21. The two young men had planted multiple bombs on the high school campus that neglected to go off, sparing many of the intended casualties.

In a statement released through her attorney, Acord’s mother Marianne Fox said, "My heart goes out to everyone affected by Grant's struggle with PANDAS, a rare form of OCD. I grieve for my son, but understand and support the efforts of law enforcement to keep our beloved community safe.

"This is a challenging and confusing time for everyone who knows Grant,” Fox added. “I will have no further comment while I wait with the rest of you to see what unfolds."
