Marco Rubio Voices Concern With Beyoncé, Jay-Z Cuba Trip
Beyoncé and Jay-Z's trip to Cuba to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary has caused quite a stir in Washington, D.C. Senator Marco Rubio from Florida is one of the latest elected officials to weigh in with sentiments of concern.
“According to recent news reports, Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s Cuba trip, which the regime seized on for propaganda purposes, was fully licensed by the Treasury Department,” Rubio said in a public statement on Monday. “If true, the Obama administration should explain exactly how trips like these comply with U.S. law and regulations governing travel to Cuba and it should disclose how many more of these trips they have licensed.”
Florida Republican congressmen Illeana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart sent a joint letter to the federal office in charge of American's travel to Cuba in an effort to discern how Beyoncé and Jay-Z got permission to visit the Caribbean island nation. Travel to Cuba is prohibited unless it’s for journalistic, academic or humanitarian reasons. The music power couple would have needed a license of some kind, or special permission.
Since the inquiry was issued by the two Florida congressmen, it’s been established that the United States Treasury Department fully licensed the couple to take a “cultural trip” to Cuba.
“I think there is going to be a lot of questions for the administration as to how these two very high-profile, very well-connected individuals got to spend their anniversary in Havana,” Rick Klein, political director for ABC News, said.
