A Los Angeles Uber driver has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a woman who’d received a ride from him after a night out.

Uber Driver Arrested On Kidnapping Charge

The driver, Frederick Dencer, 32, was arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department Tuesday. He was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping with the intent to sexually assault, reported the Los Angeles Times.

The alleged victim, a 26-year-old woman, was under the influence of alcohol when she exited a West Hollywood nightclub Sunday in search of a ride home. A valet approached Dencer for the woman. Instead of bringing her home, Dencer allegedly brought her to a motel where they both spent the night.

Dencer "took advantage of the situation and drove her to a cheap motel, which he had visited before, and carried her into the room,” Lt. Paul Vernon of the LAPD said in a statement. “He slept right in the room. When she awoke, he let her leave, though he asked her to stay, according to the victim.”

In the morning, the woman called 911 from a convenience store to report the incident.

With an investigation into Dencer underway, Uber has suspended his account and committed to helping the LAPD with the investigation. However, Uber has been trying to distance the company from Denison’s alleged actions, claiming he may not have been officially on duty at the time of the reported incident.

"The facts are unknown at this stage and it’s certainly unclear that this is an Uber-related incident,” the company said in a statement. “As the driver in question was not logged in, connected to or operating on the platform at the time.”
